Dear Sabine,

You were a student of mine and I had the privelege to curate your first exhibition.

I have followed your artistic career since its beginning, and now here I am writing to you, in person, about your work.

As you know, I have been curating various photographic events for years and every day I am in contact with renowned photographers for the editorial business, books and exhibitions in galleries and museums. Put it this way, I live photography full-time!

Nevertheless, for some time now, I've been strongly attracted to a different, or rather more private, kind of photography, which while less narrative from a journalistic point of view, is more intense if interpreted as sentiment, as a means for self awareness.

Finding you again has something to do with coincidence, that same coincidence you exert and seek enduringly.

These photos of yours have the feel of "objets trouvés": images that register the past of a single face, but reach us like a family album, whose story is told through resemblance and kindred expressions.

In your images I perceive a desperate need for a sense of belonging that you have always sought after. Your artistic act reconstructs the story of life and arranges the images in chronological order, as the only evidence of your origins.

You use these photographs as a base for self reflection, that starts with your quest for a body double - a superficial resemblance and a some sort of beyond physical connection - to attain recognition of yourself, with men and women you've never seen before. Unknown people that wear t-shirts bearing the name Sabine Delafon are associated to you for some unknown reason, and from that moment on they become part of your ideal family.

The act of photography represents for you the fundamental element of relation and testimony of an imagined reality, asserted in the depersonalizing age of iconism.

The inner dispute, the the loss of a solid identity belongs to the past

What remains is the angst of a complex and enchanting personality, that takes shape through the act of photography. The relentless search for yourself is articulated in the interminable series of portrait passport photos taken in photo booths, where your face appears in 500 photos taken from 1987 to date: since then your identity has left fleeting traces on instant images, the rest is lost in the incessant turmoil of reality.

Since 2000, seven hundred sheets (A6 format) on differents versions (3 linguage, vary change questions), were distributed, completed, archived and classified from A to Z to verify this theory.

Lucy Dorothea Napoline and the Sabine Delafon Corporation (L.D.N and the SDC)

Il progetto di Sabine Delafon, Lucy Dorothea Napoline and the Sabine Delafon Corporation, artista francese da anni residente in Italia, trova il suo fulcro nel tema dell’identità, già al centro della ricerca dell’artista in differenti progetti e lavori.

Sabine Delafon durante il periodo della maternità nel 2006 si è fatta ritrarre da 21 persone, alcune già conosciute, amici o parenti, altre contattate appositamente per commissionargli la fotografia. Ogni fotografo è stato lasciato libero di ritrarre l’artista secondo la propria propensione, ispirazione o visione. Il risultato caleidoscopico, per forme ed estetiche, non è la moltiplicazione di Sabine Delafon in 21 pose differenti, ma paradossalmente è il dissolvimento dell’identità Sabine Delafon, in un’immagine più astratta e universale, quella della Maternità, che con forza e garbo, diviene la protagonista degli scatti.

L’opera costituita dalle 21 fotografie, di altrettanti fotografi professionisti e non, costituisce un oggetto unico ed inscindibile a firma di Sabine Delafon, di cui ogni singola immagine fotografica è una parte necessaria alla decostruzione dell’identità univoca della giovane donna incinta ritratta. Ma è allo stesso tempo anche utile a mettere in discussione la firma dell’opera. Nell’atto di riunirle in un'unica forma installativa, Sabine Delafon diviene unica autrice dell’opera realizzata dalle fotografie di altri 21 autori. Ma ne è anche l’oggetto evanescente e sfuggente. In un unico gesto estetico, oggetto e soggetto si mescolano, ciò che ne risulta è un autoritratto di Sabine Delafon, ma non eseguito da lei.

Sabine Delafon nel 2008 fonda la Sabine Delafon Corporation. Anche se precedente alla data di fondazione, questo lavoro L.D.N and the SDC rientra perfettamente nel concetto di questa corporazione e ne anticipa in modo premonitorio lo sviluppo ed in futuro il lavoro dell'artista.

Il progetto espositivo di L.D.N and the SDC, prevede un’unica installazione a parete composta dalle 21 fotografie, ognuna delle quali stampata nelle dimensioni e nel formato prescelto dal suo autore.

Edoardo SDC - Pensierino collegante-decostruttivo

Di gruppi artistici se ne conoscono molti, ma SDC non è un gruppo come gli altri:
non cerca un'identità collettiva, non vuole creare un nuovo soggetto, artistico o politico.
Non si espone al fallimento delle proposte moderne e postmoderne, avanguardie e postavanguardie, proclamanti che l'ora è venuta perché il Nuovo Evento si affacci sullla scena dell'Arte.
SDC è la necessaria (eticamente doverosa) decostruzione della soggettività dell'Artista, che qui ha nome Sabine Delafon.

SD ha messo in gioco la propria identità personale e artistica molto più di quanto abbiano fatto altri, e più di quanto avesse fatto lei stessa in precedenza: inventando SDC, SD non ha inteso sovrapporre l'identità altrui alla propria, ma ha bensì disperso la propria identità in una molteplicità di singoli individui.

SDC è una relazione, non un semplice gruppo: anzi, è relazione di relazioni (ogni individuo è in se stesso relazione). In un gruppo, gli individui hanno un'identità determinata, che interagisce con quella altrui. Nella relazione, ogni individuo è interdipendente dagli altri individui: i confini della comunità diventano virtuali.
Non c'è limite alle dimensioni di SDC e non c'è regola per farne parte, purché vi siano da offrire positività e non negatività. Al limite SDC potrà coincidere con l'intera umanità positivamente disposta verso l'Altro.

All'interno della relazione SDC, io, ex-Edoardo, lavoro perché ognuno si metta in relazione con tutti, per finirla di pensarsi come un Sé separato. Con SDC io lavoro alla decostruzione del soggetto e alla scoperta della comunità che viene.

SDC è la comunità che viene. Da quanto tempo la attendevamo?
