I perfectly remember when I got closer to Sabine’s sensibility and I set with her at Bar Love’s counter to share drinks and thoughts about her art activity.

An e-mail exchange begun then and she invited me to visit her studio where she received me with a coffee and a typical Carnival’s cake. I see her like this: a mix between a strong, bitter woman and a sweet child reflecting her daughter Napoline.

My attention was caught firstly by the works with glass she made, a parallelism to the research on self-portrait by shooting herself in passport photos. The following step was to make portraits of people she knew by using the glass and other materials for the details. The answer on one own’s identity is never clear but esoteric.

This subject goes on with the use of her name contaminated by other people that then overstep the artist’s level by wearing Sabine Delafon’s name on a t-shirt – as one of her collaborations with the brand Marios – or sign her business cards.

Then at one point watching her works’ documentation became like a card’s game full of iconic symbols: the four-leaved clover, the heart, the star. Repetitiveness and multitude are her way of spreading these words, making them visible around cities for a wide public and response in a “legal vandalism”.

Another present theme is the survey on “the other half of the orange”, as she likes to define it, by trying to find lookalikes in the universe and human kind here seen as unknown, God and hereafter.

This impossibility gave life to Sabine Delafon Corporation, her fulfill by making people / other artists part of her works. But not even this was enough and The Emilie La Reine Foundation was created with anonymous collaborations and by using a second-name, Emilie, pretending to be a queen. “I am hungry” billboards and artists’ exchanges are on going after that.

I see her as the feminine version of Franco Vaccari.

Gentile Sabine,

riordinando il mio archivio ho ritrovato la foto che le accludo.

Le confesso che ignoravo la sua identità ma quell'omaggio in stile necrologio per un'artista viva e attiva affisso in una stradina romana a pochi passi da piazza della Pilotta, mi incuriosì e lo fotografai, era il 17 maggio 2008.

Ho fatto un giro nel suo sito e l'ho, per così dire, conosciuta.

Chi sia stato l'autore di quello spiritoso omaggio io non lo so ma lei, forse, sì.

L’artista Sabine Delafon (Grenoble, Francia, 1975) presenta “Le Rayon vert”, una selezione della serie dei “Quadri fogli”, da una collezione di 3000 quadrifogli iniziata dalla Delafon nel 1999.

“Una ricerca – ha commentato Delafon - sulla rarità, lʼeccezione, la superstizione, il destino“.

Il raggio verde è un fenomeno naturale piuttosto impercettibile allʼocchio, da intendersi come rivelazione momentanea, segno, nella poetica artistica della Delafon, di un rapporto costante tra una dimensione fisica visibile ed una più astratta e metafisica. Quello creato da Sabine Delafon è in effetti un raggio verde immaginario, più mentale che reale, composto da una serie di venti quadrifogli (40 x 32 cm) stampati, montati su alluminio e sotto plexiglas, posti uno accanto allʼaltro a formare un orizzonte di colore verde formato da tante icone portafortuna.

Nel lavoro della Delafon sacro e profano, vero e verosimile, convivono e, a volte, si mescolano e si confondono lʼuno nellʼaltro. La sua ricerca ha la caratteristica di collocarsi in una zona liminare, in un luogo di passaggio che rende i suoi lavori fragili ed incorporei.

Le Rayon vert di Sabine Delafon è, dunque, un miraggio che si concretizza, un raggio verde di buona sorte e buona fortuna.

3 000 Quadri fogli - Le rayon vert - Warehouse

Le rayon vert di Sabine Delafon (Grenoble, 1975; vive a Milano): 20 stampe di quadrifogli insinuano il dubbio sulla loro reale presenza, immagini all’apparenza più vere del reale. Sono parte di una collezione che l’artista ha cominciato nel 1999 e che oggi comprende 3mila quadrifogli, ognuno dalle misure e forme differenti, ma tutti ben riconoscibili per le note caratteristiche portafortuna.

"Un raggio verde, ma di un verde meraviglioso, di un verde che nessun pittore può ottenere sulla sua tavolozza, un verde di cui la natura né la varietà dei vegetali, né nel colore del mare più limpido, hai mai riportato la sfumatura!”: così parlava Jules Verne di quel fenomeno ottico che chi è fortunato può vedere per pochissimi istanti nelle giornate d’estate al tramonto. "Quest’ultimo raggio è delicato come una fiaba; la persona che lo vedrà sarà capace di leggere i propri sentimenti e quelli altrui”, fa eco Rohmer: che siano o non siano queste le suggestioni cui l’opera di Sabine Delafon vuole dare luogo, è davvero delicata come una fiaba e la visione di questo orizzonte verde è sicuramente un’allegria e uno stupore per gli occhi.

3000 Four-leaf clovers at Massimo Alba Studio

Luck and coincidence, superstition and rarity, error and destiny are the words chosen by Sabine Delafon to describe her work.

The four-leaf clover is green. It's a common plant with a recessive gene or an environmental mutation. It has been since medieval times, when myth suggested it also had spiritual power.

The photographs vividly recall the triumphant findings of these lucky charms in childhood. The joy of investigation and discovery.They standout like little green trophies preserved by a flower press so it might last forever and mesmerize by conjuring up images of leprechauns and fairies, delicate, fine and so difficult to find.

Through their simplicity four-leaf clover represent the spontaneous complexity of nature and certain aspects of the human experience.

The exhibition in the Massimo Alba studio donates a message of lightness and hope in a time plagued by apocalyptical visions of the future and encourages us to reflect on the potency of nature.

Il quadrifoglio è in natura un'anomalia, rappresenta una rarità. Per la tradizione popolare trovarne uno porterebbe fortuna; anche riceverlo sarebbe di buon auspicio. Anche un pensiero, un dono inaspettato, sono una rarità.

Un anno fa, il 31 gennaio 2007 Sabine Delafon ha inviato ad amici e conoscenti, professionisti del mondo dell'arte e non, l'immagine di un quadrifoglio come presente benaugurante per l'anno nuovo. Raccolti e collezionati dall'artista dal 1999 i quadrifogli sono 3000, ognuno differente, con le sue caratteristiche, ognuno unico, come i suoi possessori, quelli che lo hanno già e quelli che dal 17 gennaio potranno vederli esposti con la collezione di Massimo Alba in via Corsico, 8 Milano.

Sabine Delafon nasce a Grenoble nel 1975. Vive attualmente a Milano. Ha realizzato in meno di 10 anni più di 70 tra personali, collettive, azioni e performance. Fonda la Sabine Delafon Corporation nel 2008. Al giorno d'oggi comprende più di 50 membri tra cui Massimo Alba, Marcia Caines e Francesca di Nardo.
